Denniston "Mad Max" Sutherland grew up in one of Jamaica's tougher neighborhoods and at the age of 16, inspired by Mike Tyson, began boxing at one of the local clubs.
In 1999, Denniston moved to the UK in search of greater opportunities. A dedicated husband and father, he began training MMA at the age of 32 while working full time to support his family.
Diving in head first, he took his first professional fight at heavyweight against an opponent 30kg heavier. In the first round he lifted the bigger fighter and slammed him onto the canvas, causing the cage to actually break. Although he lost in the second round, Max was not discouraged and became even more dedicated to pursuing an MMA career.
Since then Denniston has made a significant impact on the UK MMA circuit, winning no less than six titles at Light Heavyweight and Middleweight. With more than half his wins coming by KO or TKO, Denniston Sutherland is respected in the UK MMA community as a strong, well-rounded finisher who comes forward and brings war every time he steps in the cage.
Having recently won the UCMMA middleweight championship with a first-round knockout of UK MMA legend Mark Weir, he is now looking to make his way onto the international stage. Denniston runs his own MMA club - Hemel Martial Arts - and is a member of Team Crossface. His training camp includes former UFC fighter and full time MMA coach Dave Lee, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Ze Marcello of BTT, and Dave Scarborough of Kickbox Fitness.
